Position Overview

Canonical, the publisher of Ubuntu, is a pioneering leader in open source software and operating systems for enterprise and technology markets. We are looking for exceptional 2024 and 2025 Graduate Software Engineers who are passionate about open source and eager to tackle challenging engineering projects across the entire Linux stack—from BIOS and boot loaders to cloud-based applications. This globally remote role offers the opportunity to work on diverse technologies, engage with the open source community, and develop your skills in a collaborative environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Shaping the roadmap for your product during global sprints every six months
  • Focusing on design and user experience, even for developer tooling and command line apps
  • Writing high quality, resilient and performant code for millions of daily users
  • Working towards mastery of key programming languages and Linux system knowledge
  • Engaging with users and the open source community through code reviews and issue trackers
  • Responding to customer issues while developing an understanding of enterprise requirements
  • Developing skills in secure software design and implementation

Required Qualifications

  • Exceptional academic track record from high school and university
  • Undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Business Informatics, Mathematics, or another STEM discipline with programming courses
  • Confidence to deliver high quality code in Python, Rust, C/C++, Golang, JavaScript, or Java
  • Experience with Ubuntu or another Linux distribution
  • A track record of exceeding expectations with outstanding results
  • Result-oriented, organized, and driven to meet commitments
  • Engagement in personal technology or software engineering projects beyond the curriculum
  • Professional written and spoken English
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, curiosity, flexibility, and accountability
  • Willingness to travel internationally twice a year for company events

  • Upstream open source contributions
  • Packaging and Linux distribution contributions (Debian, Fedora, Arch, Nix, or another)
