You will be required to perform engineering work in connection with a wide variety of heavy civil projects that range in size, diculty, and duration. You will also be involved in the district estimating unit at various points in your career, which involves quantity takeos, time studies, cost estimating, participating in estimate reviews and bid close-out.

Kiewit Southwest District specializes in heavy civil, transportation and water projects. We typically self-perform a large portion of the work including mass grading, drainage, PCCP paving, utilities and more. While headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona, our projects span nationwide – from large cities to small towns – requiring travel and potential relocation as business demands.

Key Responsibilities

  • Field Engineering:
    • Assist in interpretation of drawings and specifications for field crews and craft supervision.
    • Perform quantity calculations by taking measurements and determining percentage of completed/installed materials and work.
    • Assist in the preparation of work plans and work packages.
    • Assist in field surveying and work layout support including elevation, control points, and compilation of as-built data.
    • Assist in compiling, processing, and confirming daily labor timesheets.
    • Assist in the preparation of Job Hazard Analysis (JHA's).
    • Assist in providing solutions related to heavy civil, transportation and water projects and construction operations.
    • Participate in jobsite safety reviews, toolbox meetings, mass safety meetings, and safety training.
    • Order and schedule material deliveries.
    • Plan, schedule, and coordinate work groups on the jobsite.
    • Supervise field operations.
  • Office Engineering:
    • Perform material takeoffs from drawings, specifications, and other contract documents.
    • Perform basic engineering calculations and technical drafting to support field operations.
    • Assist engineers to gather and prepare data for submittal or transmittal to customers, vendors, subcontractors, governmental agencies, and internal use.
    • Participate in the preparation of purchase orders and subcontracts, performing minor solicitations and purchasing as requested.
    • Schedule maintenance and perform updates as directed.
    • Assist in maintaining basic project recordkeeping and correspondence including daily reports, photographs, RFIs, and memorandums.
    • Enter data into the job cost system and review cost reports with jobsite management.
    • Assist in generating change orders and as-built data for review by the Project Manager.
    • Provide field support and supervise subcontractor operations.
  • Estimating:
    • Assist in reviewing and analyzing historical data relative to the project, incorporating various productions and costs for bid preparation.
    • Complete plan and specification reviews for assigned projects, assessing risk areas and notifying the Senior Estimator.
    • Complete material and quantity takeoffs according to bid documents.

Required Qualifications

  • Must be willing and able to work in the Heavy Civil, Construction Industry.
  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in civil engineering, construction management, or a related field (examples include civil engineering, mechanical, construction management, mining, geotechnical).
  • Experience with leadership and management of people, along with strong written and verbal communication, planning, and organizational skills.
  • Willingness to travel and relocate to both small and large cities as required on a national scale.
  • Ability to access all points of a construction site in varied climates and environments.
  • Highly motivated with a demonstrated passion for excellence and taking initiative.
  • Strong work ethic with readiness to work rotating schedules, shifts, or weekends as required.
  • Demonstrated commitment to ethics and integrity.
  • Passion for safety with the ability to contribute to a safe working environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills alongside written and verbal communication capabilities.
  • Team player who can also work independently to meet deadlines and objectives.
  • Strong time management skills and attention to detail.
  • Education: Relevant degree in engineering, construction management, or similar field.
  • Must have a valid Driver's License and reliable transportation.
  • Ability to begin or continue working without requiring sponsorship for employment now or in the future.
  • Regular, reliable attendance.
  • Work productively and meet deadlines timely.
  • Communicate and interact effectively and professionally with supervisors, employees, and others in a team environment.
  • Perform work safely and effectively while following oral and written instructions, including safety protocols and equipment use.
  • Ability to work during normal operating hours to complete work within deadlines, with overtime and weekend work as required.
  • Flexibility to work at various locations under differing conditions.
  • Location: Projects vary nationwide with headquarters in Phoenix, Arizona; travel and relocation required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous internship experience is preferred.

  • Compensation: $82,000 - $90,000 (Actual compensation is subject to variation based on education, experience, skillset, and/or location)
