Position Overview

Technical Specialist 2 (Telecommunications) – Your Future at M.C. Dean. This position may involve bids and proposals development, design and construction document coordination, field coordination, commissioning, and testing for telecommunications, low voltage systems, and associated infrastructure on projects of various scale. You will also create and manage engineering planning documentation including design logs, schedules, technical reference libraries, and compliance matrices to support project design and construction.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work and communicate effectively with customers, general contractors, trades, manufacturers, and project staff in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
  • Interface with clients and project team members regularly to ensure project goals are met and risks mitigated.
  • Assist in the design and coordination of telecom infrastructure requirements for systems such as CCTV, access control, fire alarm, and building automation.
  • Coordinate with other trades for Low Voltage Systems requirements including public address systems, distributed antenna systems, and emergency phones.
  • Engage with suppliers and manufacturers to stay updated on the latest technologies and equipment.
  • Develop a working knowledge of relevant NFPA codes, ANSI/TIA standards, BICSI manuals, and other industry standards.
  • Assist in project bids through take offs, proposal development, time estimates, and close-out documentation.
  • Interpret statements of work, design drawings, project specifications, and schedules.
  • Conduct site surveys and visits as required.
  • Develop and maintain various project documents including RFIs, compliance matrices, technical libraries, drawing logs, labeling plans, testing plans, specifications, cable run lists, and construction drawings.
  • Use AutoCAD and Revit to create detailed design and construction drawings such as floor plans, enlarged plans, and detail drawings.
  • Produce and coordinate construction drawings for modular construction applications.
  • Perform telecommunication calculations including conduit and cable tray fill, cable quantities, and distances.
  • Create and manage project-specific IMMS instances.
  • Review test results for compliance with project specifications.
  • Use Bluebeam for peer, technical, and coordination reviews of engineering submittal documents.
  • Review designs and deliverables produced by less-experienced engineers to ensure compliance with M.C. Dean and industry standards.
  • Engage in the project quality control process and produce reports based on site visit observations.
  • Provide support, mentorship, and instruction to less-experienced engineers.
  • Assist with the management of engineering resources on projects.
  • Assist in lead low voltage system testing in a lab environment.
  • Commission and test low voltage systems in the field.
  • Perform minor supervisory duties related to less-experienced engineers and project management.
  • Support project management with construction activities as required.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in an engineering discipline from an ABET-accredited university with a minimum of 6+ years of telecommunications experience; OR a High School Diploma/GED with 8+ years of industry experience.
  • Basic understanding of EIA/TIA standards and NFPA Codes.
  • Working knowledge of passive systems (structured cabling and its components).
  • Working knowledge of active systems (e.g., Public Address Systems, Sound Masking Systems, Distributed Antenna Systems, Area of Refuge Systems, Wireless LAN, etc.).
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and Revit.
  • Ability to identify, track, and complete project engineering activities effectively.
  • Strong capability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Willingness to expand technical knowledge to accommodate emerging systems and technologies.
  • Ability to work for extended periods on computer screens and sit for long durations.
  • Manual dexterity to manipulate objects (e.g., using a keyboard) and effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to apply general rules to specific situations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous field installation and testing experience.
  • Manufacturer certifications.
  • BICSI Registered Communications Distribution Designer (RCDD).
  • Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM).
