Job Description

Position Overview

This is not a Civil Service Position. DWSD employees are subject to provisions of Court Orders entered in United States District Court, Eastern District of Michigan, Southern Division, Case No. 77-71100 regarding certain employment terms. Applicants must be authorized to work for ANY employer in the U.S. DWSD is unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa at this time.

The Automotive Fleet Technician makes service repairs and performs maintenance on one or more makes of automotive equipment including, but not limited to, fleet vehicles, dump trucks, backhoes, vactors, sweepers, flushers, bulldozers, and tractors used in daily operations at various facilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive maintenance on fleet vehicles and equipment (e.g., changing oil, repairing or replacing tires, lubricating chassis, changing air and fuel filters, and checking fluids).
  • Complete inspections of parts and engines for abnormalities, road test vehicles, and perform routine maintenance on equipment such as pumps, compressors, and generators.
  • Follow security and safety policies, wear personal protective equipment (PPE), and provide on the job training.
  • Inspect working conditions, maintain cleanliness of equipment and surrounding areas, and manage inventory control including repair orders.
  • Perform scheduled preventative maintenance on tools and equipment and respond to after-hour emergencies and on-call responses.

Required Qualifications

  • Solid knowledge of automotive repairs, computerized maintenance management systems, and inventory/service contracting procedures.
  • Proven ability to initiate and complete repairs, generate work orders, and maintain/update various databases and automated records.
  • Excellent ability to follow safety protocols, maintain reliable attendance, effectively communicate (verbally and in writing), and manage preventive maintenance records.
  • Minimum education equivalent to two (2) years of post-secondary training or equivalent years of service; Specialty Mechanic License required.
  • Valid Michigan Commercial Driver’s License along with a Temporary Instruction Permit (TIP); CDL is preferred.
  • Physical capability to perform labor-intensive tasks such as climbing, balancing, lifting, and working in varied environmental conditions including confined spaces and hazardous areas.
