Job Description

Position Overview

GFT is seeking an Rail Civil Engineer to join our Transportation Team in Kansas City, MO. This hybrid role requires regular attendance at the Kansas City office and offers the opportunity to engage in transformative projects that enhance transportation infrastructure and improve community connectivity. You will work on a variety of projects including rail, road, airport infrastructure, coastal development, site development, storm water management, and utilities design. Compensation: $70,000 - $88,000 (dependent upon experience and geographic location).

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare construction documents using MicroStation/OpenRail.
  • Develop horizontal and vertical designs for new track alignments, industry track loops, yard expansions, rehabilitation projects with drainage considerations, and grading plans.
  • Assist in preparing probable construction costs and cost estimates.
  • Collaborate with civil, structural, and signal teams to integrate rail projects into broader transportation networks.
  • Support permitting efforts and ensure compliance with AREMA standards and railroad engineering guidelines.
  • Follow instructions from the Project Manager or Senior Project Engineers to achieve desired results.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (F.E.) exam.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ professional civil engineering rail design experience.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and MicroStation/OpenRail Designer.
  • Ability to read plans and shop drawings and evaluate contractor compliance with construction plans and specifications.
  • Strong communication skills, excellent organization, and effective time management.
  • Experience working with public agencies, railroads, and private developers.
