Job Description

Position Overview

At Toro’s Irrigation and Lighting business in Riverside, CA, the Sr. Engineer for Product Development supports both new product development and sustaining engineering activities. This role is integral to designing and improving innovative mechanical and electromechanical products and systems for renowned brands like Toro® and Irritrol®, as well as Unique Lighting Systems. You will work on everything from concept research and product design to prototype fabrication and quality testing in a collaborative, cross-functional environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Research and analyze customer design proposals, specifications, and manuals to determine design feasibility.
  • Design products and systems including instruments, controls, robots, machines, and various mechanical, thermal, hydraulic, or heat transfer systems.
  • Collaborate in cross-functional development teams to plan, schedule, and implement project requirements, specifications, cost targets, and performance criteria.
  • Prepare and modify detailed mechanical layouts and CAD drawings for new or existing designs and assemblies.
  • Conduct tolerance studies, participate in Failure Effects Modes Analysis (FMEA) and Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA), and create both product and quality specifications.
  • Oversee fabrication of prototypes, testing per quality specifications, and the selection of raw and purchased materials, including making disposition decisions through the Material Review Board process.
  • Provide sustaining engineering support to implement design changes, process improvements, and cost reduction projects at production plants.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or an equivalent ABET accredited engineering program.
  • Relevant engineering experience at Engineer IV (7+ years) and Engineer V (10+ years) levels.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex documents.
  • Proven capability to respond effectively to sensitive inquiries or complaints and make persuasive presentations on complex topics.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of EIT certification.
  • Familiarity with systems applications software such as SAP.
  • Experience with Microsoft Project.
