Salary: Engineering Assistant I: $51,158 - $81,351; Engineering Assistant II: $54,278 - $87,046
Schedule: Full-time, Day Job Shift, Mon-Fri: 8-5
Compensation: Yearly; FLSA Status: Nonexempt
The San Antonio District is seeking highly motivated and exceptionally well-rounded professionals to join its outstanding force of civil engineers. The Engineering Assistant (EA) Program provides optimal training and comprehensive, hands-on experience to recent young graduate engineers. With exposure to all aspects of civil engineering, TxDOT’s engineers are equipped to handle complex situations and challenges. The program features a rotation schedule with 24 months in Design, 18 months in Construction, 6 months in Operation, and assignment of a mentor – a commitment to developing the leaders of tomorrow.
Key Responsibilities
- Actively prepares for professional engineering licensing/registration through appropriate training, exams, and documentation upkeep.
- Applies engineering principles, methods, and techniques to a wide variety of transportation-related activities.
- Assists during emergencies and inclement weather.
- Participates in survey activities and collects engineering data at project sites.
- Creates detailed plans, specifications, and estimates (PS&E) and performs related drafting/design work.
- Prepares drawings and exhibits to support public involvement and reviews construction plans prepared by consultants.
- Utilizes automated roadway/structural/hydraulic design software and computer-assisted drafting systems.
- Participates in the Engineering Assistant Career Development Program, which involves job rotation, training, and continuing education.
- For Engineering Assistant II, additionally performs advanced and specialized engineering design work and assists in training less experienced personnel.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related science (a bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS). Acceptable substitutions include a Master's or Doctoral degree from an appropriately accredited institution.
- Experience Required: Engineering Assistant I requires no prior work experience; Engineering Assistant II requires 1 year of engineering-related experience (full-time or prorated part-time equivalent).
- Requirements: Valid driver’s license is required. For Engineering Assistant II, possession of a TX Engineer In Training Certificate is mandatory.
