Job Description
Key Responsibilities
- Adheres to Medical Assistant scope of practice, follows all policies and procedures, and maintains training and competency based on area of specialty when providing patient care.
- Performs rooming/visit tasks such as vital signs, medication reconciliation, medical history review, health maintenance, allergy review, and various screenings (depression, suicide, falls, social drivers of health, etc.).
- Assists provider with or performs procedures as ordered.
- Performs lab-related duties including venipuncture, specimen collection/labeling/packing, preparation of lab orders/requisitions, results tracking, Point of Care testing (POCT) per standing/provider orders, and CLIA-waived tests in adherence to standards.
- Administers medications and vaccines safely following the rights of medication administration.
- Completes additional duties as assigned (medication refills, insurance authorizations, safety/regulatory log completion, patient messaging, medication/supply ordering, appointment scheduling, and referrals).
- Cross-trained to perform duties relevant to the specialty or clinic practice within the scope of the Medical Assistant.
- Demonstrates effective and timely communication, teamwork, and proper escalation when needed.
- Maintains a clean work environment by ensuring instruments and equipment are cleaned appropriately, and areas remain stocked and operational.
- Demonstrates age-appropriate care by understanding growth and development principles and assessing patient needs accordingly.
Required Qualifications
- Education: High School Diploma or GED required; completion of an accredited/approved Medical Assistant program or 2 years of verifiable full-time experience as a Medical Assistant within the last 5 years.
- Certification / License: Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association must be obtained within 45 days (unless exempted by department leadership).
- Experience: No prior experience required.
- Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Ability to perform routine and complex technical skills within scope, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, proficient computer skills (including electronic medical records), and strong customer service aptitude.
- Physical Requirements & Working Conditions: Must be capable of sitting, standing, walking, lifting (up to 35 pounds independently; otherwise, assistive patient lift protocols apply), bending, twisting, and other physical activities. Must be able to perform fine-hand manipulation and work in environments with mechanical, electrical, chemical, and biological hazards, wearing protective clothing as needed.
