Job Description
Position Overview
Within the Health Services division of HCJPD, the Medical Officer – Licensed Vocational Nurse/Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedic (EMT-P) provides safe and effective medical care for juveniles in custody. Reporting to a Registered Nurse/Physician, this role supports the overall functioning of the medical department through assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation of care.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide nursing care with a focus on residents’ needs using a systematic Nursing Process (assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation).
- Utilize a problem-solving approach in practice, reporting pertinent information to the supervising Registered Nurse and/or Physician.
- Perform technical clinical skills within the LVN scope of practice and in accordance with agency policies.
- Conduct diagnostic tests, administer medications, set up equipment, and apply therapeutic treatments.
- Document patient care, observations, and treatment responses accurately in charts and reports.
- Educate residents and family members/guardians regarding medications, treatment information, and disease processes.
- Promote positive outcomes by providing ethical, confidential, and compassionate care.
- Assign specific tasks and supervise unlicensed personnel as required in a structured healthcare setting.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of two (2) years of licensed nursing experience and at least one (1) year of working with adolescents or in correctional care.
- Licensed by the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners with current CPR certification.
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Possess a valid Texas Driver's License, maintain liability insurance, and successfully pass background and drug screenings.
Preferred Qualifications
- Understanding of Standard/Universal Precautions and infection control procedures.
- Knowledge of nursing care standards, medication administration protocols, and emergency medical practices.
- Experience in crisis intervention and familiarity with de-escalation strategies.
