Our client, a leader in advanced manufacturing and industrial equipment, is seeking a Principal Mechanical Design Engineer to join their esteemed engineering team in Des Moines, Iowa, US. This hybrid role involves significant on-site design and development work, complemented by strategic remote collaboration. The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in conceptualizing, designing, and validating complex mechanical systems, with a focus on innovation and manufacturability. You will be responsible for leading critical design projects, mentoring junior engineers, and ensuring the highest standards of engineering excellence.
Responsibilities
- Lead the design and development of complex mechanical components and systems from concept to production, utilizing CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Inventor, CATIA).
- Perform detailed engineering analysis, including stress, thermal, and vibration analysis using FEA tools.
- Develop and optimize designs for manufacturability, assembly, and cost-effectiveness.
- Create and maintain detailed engineering drawings, specifications, and Bill of Materials (BOMs).
- Oversee prototyping, testing, and validation of mechanical designs, ensuring they meet performance and reliability requirements.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including electrical engineers, software developers, and manufacturing personnel.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior mechanical engineers.
- Stay abreast of new technologies, materials, and design methodologies in mechanical engineering.
- Troubleshoot and resolve design-related issues encountered during manufacturing and field operations.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of engineering processes and standards.
- Prepare technical documentation and present design reviews to stakeholders.
Qualifications
- Education: Master's degree or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field.
- Experience: Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in mechanical design and engineering, with a strong focus on industrial equipment or complex machinery.
- Skills: Expertise in CAD software, advanced FEA tools, and GD&T standards.
- Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of materials science, thermodynamics, and machine dynamics.
- Leadership: Proven experience in leading design projects from inception through to commercialization.
- Analytical Skills: Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills.
- Communication: Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to mentor and guide engineering teams.
- Work Environment: Experience working in a hybrid environment, effectively managing on-site and remote responsibilities.
- Manufacturing Processes: Familiarity with various manufacturing processes (e.g., machining, casting, injection molding).
- Travel: Ability to travel occasionally to supplier or manufacturing sites.
