Job Description
Position Overview
As an essential member of the Transportation team at Brightline, you will operate locomotives along the Florida Corridor to ensure a safe, efficient, and timely ride for our guests. In this role you will be empowered to own your zone, demonstrate strong communication, and bounce back from setbacks while upholding the highest safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate locomotives to transport guests and provide a high level of ride comfort.
- Perform set procedures prior to starting train operation, including reviewing daily special instructions, train makeup, restrictions, and tonnage.
- Inspect locomotives for operational readiness by verifying fuel, sand, water, and other supplies, and by checking mechanical functions using inspection checklists.
- Ensure proper brake examinations, inspections, and tests are conducted in compliance with federal regulations and company standards.
- Interpret train orders, signals, and railroad rules while processing multiple inputs with focus and minimal distractions.
- Respond to starting signals by manipulating controls such as throttles and air brakes to drive diesel-electric locomotives.
- Monitor gauges, meters, and safety devices including cab signal and Positive Train Control (PTC) systems.
- Observe tracks to detect obstructions and anticipate operating issues.
- Communicate frequently with Passenger Conductors, Train Managers, and Dispatchers regarding stops, delays, and oncoming trains.
- Respond to emergency conditions or breakdowns by following established safety protocols.
- Inspect, identify, and record locomotive defects and irregularities, and report issues appropriately.
- Prepare reports detailing any incidents such as accidents, signaling problems, unscheduled stops, or delays.
- Drive Brightline vehicles between yards and stations as needed.
- Monitor and review all Brightline communication channels during work hours to stay updated on company notifications.
Required Qualifications
- Education: Certified Conductor (CFR Title 49, Part 242) with a minimum of 2 years of railroad experience or Certified Locomotive Engineer (CFR Title 49, Part 240) with at least 1 year of experience, including successful training in FECR/Brightline Operating Rules.
- Experience Required: Proven railroad experience with a strong record of safe driving and operational excellence.
- Qualifications: Demonstrated physical agility and stamina; ability to work on a continuous, set schedule which includes weekends, nights, and on-call availability; and strong interpersonal, multi-tasking, and communication skills.
- Requirements: Must pass various assessments including medical qualifications and practical examinations, while maintaining full mobility and adhering to safety protocols.
