Job Description

Position Overview

The System Antimicrobial Stewardship – Infectious Diseases Pharmacist (ASP-ID) is a clinical pharmacy specialist responsible for the development, implementation, and documentation of the antimicrobial stewardship program (ASP) across Rush University Health System. Based in Chicago, Illinois at Rush University Medical Center and working within the Pharmacy Department, this role involves multidisciplinary education on safe antimicrobial use, guideline implementation, collaborative work with clinicians and administrators, and analysis of antimicrobial utilization metrics to meet CDC and Joint Commission standards. The position is Full Time (Total FTE between 0.9 and 1.0) with a shift from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop metrics for performance and maintenance of the ASP.
  • Participate in pharmaceutical patient care through ASP staffing and clinical rounds.
  • Participate in restricted/protected antimicrobial approval.
  • Coordinate ASP education for healthcare professionals across RUSH sites and external partners.
  • Serve as a liaison and coordinate implementation of ASP initiatives while ensuring regulatory standards are met.
  • Assist with the strategic implementation of Department of Pharmacy and RUSH quality initiatives.
  • Serve as a core preceptor for postgraduate (PGY1 and PGY2) pharmacy residents and students.
  • Document clinical interventions in EPIC.
  • Participate in the Antimicrobial Stewardship Subcommittee of the System Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
  • Complete medication use evaluations (MUE) and therapeutic class reviews as assigned.
  • Represent the pharmacy in multidisciplinary committees when appropriate.
  • Evaluate, clarify, and verify EPIC orders for therapeutic appropriateness.
  • Act as a content expert for infectious disease drug shortages.
  • Participate in safety event reporting, facilitate medication reconciliation, and provide discharge teaching as needed.
  • Maintain current knowledge of medical center and departmental policies and procedures.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy.
  • Knowledge in intravenous admixture services, intravenous drug therapy, and chemotherapy.
  • Illinois Pharmacist License.
  • Minimum of four years of clinical pharmacy experience OR PGY1 residency completed within the last seven years with clinical/specialty pharmacy experience.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with others to provide safe and effective drug therapy.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an accredited institution, with completion of a PGY2 pharmacy residency in Infectious Disease and/or an Infectious Disease focused Fellowship.
  • Board Certification in Infectious Diseases Pharmacotherapy prior to or within 18 months of hire.
  • Strong clinical acumen with demonstrated ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary stakeholders and drive large-scale projects forward.
  • Board Certification in Infectious Diseases Pharmacotherapy is required within 12 months of hire.
