Position Overview
At The YMCA of Greater Seattle, we actively promote equity by removing systemic barriers and fostering a culture free from bias and injustice. As our Director of Accounting and Compliance, you will provide operational leadership for accounting activities, cash and treasury operations, audit execution, and internal controls – ensuring accurate financial reporting and strong compliance practices that uphold the financial integrity of the organization. Reporting to the Vice President of Finance and Accounting, you will supervise a team and collaborate with various departments to support timely closes, smooth audits, and consistent compliance while advancing our mission to help all people realize their fullest potential.
Key Responsibilities
- Operational Accounting Leadership: Oversee daily accounting operations, manage month-end/year-end close processes, maintain audit-ready documentation, and provide guidance on policies and fund accounting.
- Audit Coordination & Compliance: Manage external and single audits, maintain compliance calendars, coordinate documentation and PBC items, and support the preparation of Form 990 and other filings.
- Treasury & Cash Management: Oversee daily cash management, maintain treasury controls, manage banking relationships, and ensure the timely escalation of cash-related risks.
- Asset Accounting & Branch Administration: Supervise the full lifecycle of capital assets, review asset reconciliations, and lead branch administrative efforts to ensure consistent financial practices.
- Policy, Process & Systems Support: Maintain accounting policies, serve as the operational lead for ERP modules, and drive process improvements including automation and reporting enhancements.
- Staff Leadership & Collaboration: Recruit, supervise and develop staff while promoting collaboration across departments to support the overall mission of the YMCA.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (CPA, CMA, or similar credential preferred).
- Minimum 5 years’ progressive accounting experience with at least 2 years in a supervisory role.
- Experience supporting external audits, single audits, and the preparation of Form 990.
- Strong knowledge of treasury/cash management, asset accounting, capital project reporting, and fund accounting.
- Familiarity with ERP systems and revenue platforms (e.g., NetSuite, Traction Rec, or Raiser’s Edge) and advanced Excel skills.
- A strong commitment to the YMCA mission and values.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a nonprofit, human services, or grant-funded environment with familiarity in nonprofit cost allocation and fund accounting practices.
- Ability to work effectively in a matrixed organization and with diverse populations.
- Bilingual skills or ability to communicate in a language in addition to English is a plus.
