Job Description

Position Overview

Under general supervision and following established policies, procedures, and professional guidelines, the nurse delivers care to patients by planning and implementing nursing interventions, documenting assessments, identifying situations requiring further intervention, and communicating goal-directed plans of care. The role requires strict adherence to the mission, vision, and values of Tampa General Hospital and principles of quality improvement.

The ED Hold Unit is a specialized inpatient nursing department located within the Emergency Department. Staffed by a dedicated inpatient nursing team, the unit provides care for admitted Medical-Surgical and Cardiac patients under both inpatient and observation status.

Care begins in the Emergency Department and is delivered in close collaboration with the ED nursing team. Patients with inpatient status are transferred as beds become available, while those under observation remain in the ED Hold Unit for the duration of their stay.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver nursing care in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Plan, implement, and document nursing assessments and care plans.
  • Assure patient rights and facilitate clear communication of goal-directed plans of care.
  • ED Decompression: Rapidly assume care once admission orders are placed to alleviate Emergency Department congestion.
  • Safe, High-Quality Care: Deliver inpatient-level care in non-traditional ED spaces with a focus on safety and excellence.
  • Efficient Care Progression: Promote purposeful care planning to reduce length of stay and support timely patient transitions.

Required Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Florida.
