Position Overview
Seattle Public Utilities’ (SPU) Financial & Risk Services Branch is seeking an Accounting Technician III within the Accounting Division. In this role you will support payroll functions by providing customer service, auditing timesheets, processing benefit adjustments, and ensuring compliance with regulatory guidelines. Represented by PROTEC17 Administrative Support Bargaining Unit, successful candidates will be customer service-oriented, detail focused, and team-minded.
Compensation: $35.72 – $41.59 per hour
Key Responsibilities
- Provide customer service to employees at all levels regarding payroll-related inquiries.
- Review and audit timesheets on a biweekly basis to ensure accuracy and proper approval.
- Perform preliminary payroll audits in coordination with Departmental Payroll Administrators using designated audit reports.
- Process benefits-related adjustments, deductions, and one-time payments in Workday.
- Prepare and process consolidated deduction requests and other payroll adjustments as required.
- Ensure compliance with payroll processing guidelines, collective bargaining agreements, and applicable City, Federal, and State regulations.
- Collaborate with SPU’s Employment & Acquisition Team, Labor Relations, Benefits & Leave Coordination, Central Payroll, and Workday Support.
- Work effectively in a fast-paced environment while adapting to shifting priorities and deadlines.
Required Qualifications
- Three (3) years of accounting, payroll, or bookkeeping experience OR one (1) year of experience as an Accounting Technician II (or equivalent combination of education, experience, and training).
- Background in accounting or bookkeeping with a solid understanding of payroll functions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong payroll processing background.
- Excellent communication, customer service, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
- Experience researching and reconstructing employee payroll transactions.
- Demonstrated efficiency in using Microsoft Excel, Work, 10 key calculator, mainframe computer payroll systems, and internet navigation.
- Ability to interpret and communicate payroll-related rules and regulations.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet short payroll processing deadlines.
