Medical Technologist - Toxicology

Position Overview

The Medical Technologist in the Toxicology Department at the Department of Veterans Affairs is responsible for developing, performing, evaluating, interpreting, correlating, and validating laboratory procedures and results. This role requires a broad exercise of independent judgment and responsibility, focusing on toxicology testing, including immunoassay screens and confirmation testing using GC-MS and LC-MS/MS. The position involves collaboration with healthcare professionals, quality control, and education for laboratory staff and the public.

Key Responsibilities

• Collect, evaluate suitability for testing, process, and transport specimens.
• Perform a broad range of laboratory procedures including all testing and tasks of the Medical Technologist occupation.
• Perform advanced and complex laboratory procedures; recognize deviation from expected results; analyze and correct problems using scientific principles.
• Evaluate and solve problems related to collection and processing of biological specimens for analysis.
• Maintain and document the optimal functioning of laboratory equipment.
• Diagnose deviations in test performance due to instrument malfunction.
• Perform and document quality control and assurance activities and corrective actions related to test performance.
• Interpret results and suggest follow-up test selection or procedures.
• Evaluate and implement new techniques and procedures in the laboratory.
• Incorporate principles of educational methodology in the instruction and training of new employees and students.
• Communicate effectively and courteously while working as a healthcare team member.

Required Qualifications

• U.S. Citizenship is required.
• A bachelor's degree or higher in medical laboratory science, medical technology, clinical laboratory science, or a related science.
• Completion of a medical technology clinical practice program accredited by recognized agencies.
• Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) by ASCP-BOC, ASCP-BOR, or AMT.
• Proficiency in written and spoken English.

• Experience in toxicology laboratory procedures.
• Knowledge of laboratory quality control and assurance procedures.
• Ability to maintain, troubleshoot, and repair laboratory instrumentation.
