Fare Collection Systems QA Tester

Location:

San Diego, CA | Contract Position

Position Overview

We are seeking a detail-oriented Fare Collection Systems QA Tester to support quality assurance testing for Cubic Transportation Systems' next-generation faregate and fare payment solutions. This role involves hands-on testing of card-based processing, open payment systems, and fare detection technologies at transit stations in the San Diego region. The ideal candidate will have experience with transit fare collection systems and a strong understanding of QA testing methodologies.

Project Scope

This project supports testing of automated fare collection (AFC) systems for public transit operations, including Cubic's faregate infrastructure, card readers, and back-end processing systems.

Phase 1:

Card-Based Processing (December)

• Device onboarding and training

• Conduct test cases for card-based fare processing on faregates

• Compile test results and reports in TestRail

• Post-launch testing for bugs/issues during Pilot deployment

Phase 2:

Open Payment + Fare Detection (January–February)

• Conduct test cases for open payment (contactless credit/debit card) processing

• Test fare detection system functionality and accuracy

• Compile test results and reports in TestRail

• Post-launch field testing during Phase 2 Pilot

Key Responsibilities

• Execute test cases by presenting various card media types to faregate readers

• Observe and document faregate and display screen behavior during transactions

• Test business rules including transfers, fare products, and transit passes

• Document test results, defects, and observations in TestRail

• Perform regression testing after bug fixes are deployed

• Collaborate with development and project management teams on issue resolution

• Participate in field testing at transit stations during pilot deployments

Required Qualifications

• 2+ years of experience in software QA testing or hardware/device testing

• Experience with test case management tools (TestRail preferred)

• Strong attention to detail and ability to document defects clearly

• Ability to work independently in field environments

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

• Reliable transportation to travel to test sites in the San Diego area

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with transit fare collection systems or payment processing

• Familiarity with contactless payment technologies (NFC, EMV, mobile wallets)

• Background in hardware testing or embedded systems

• Previous work with Cubic Transportation Systems or similar AFC vendors

Compensation & Schedule

Pay Rate:

$45 – $65 per hour (DOE)

Duration:

December 2025 – February 2026 (Contract)

Schedule:

Monday – Friday, Day Shift (exact hours TBD)

Location:

San Diego, CA – On-site at transit facilities
