Job Description
Position Overview
Hospitals and Clinics is embarking on a new program to attract and retain qualified Healthcare Assistants (HCAs). SIGN ON BONUS OFFERED! The program provides a signing bonus for new hires at a 0.50 FTE or greater – with the first installment paid within 30 days of hire and the second after nine (9) months of employment. To qualify, the applying HCA must be an external candidate and must start the position before September 30, 2025. Note that if, during the first nine months, the FTE drops below 0.50, all future bonuses will be forfeited. This position provides direct patient care under the direction of a Registered Nurse in a patient-focused organization dedicated to excellence in care, research, and education.
Key Responsibilities
- Assists patients with feeding, drinking, ambulating, grooming, toileting, dressing, socializing, and unit-specific technical skills.
- Reinforces or assists in educating and teaching patients and their significant others as delegated by the professional care provider.
- Collects, reports, and documents data related to direct patient care activities.
- Assists with indirect patient care activities including maintaining a clean, efficient, and safe environment, companion care, housekeeping, patient transportation, and chaperoning during examinations and procedures.
- Performs unit-specific and additional clerical duties as needed, including stocking and maintaining supplies.
- Facilitates communication with hospital staff, physicians, patients, families, and visitors.
- Processes paper orders during system downtimes by recording downtime occurrence orders with corresponding start and stop times.
- May process electronic requests for ordering medical treatments and tests, and retrieve patient test and lab results.
- May schedule patient appointments and maintain patient records or activity boards on the unit.
- May manage admits, discharges, and transfers per unit standards.
- May observe the cardiac monitor and notify nursing or medical staff of any abnormal heart rhythm variances indicative of ischemia or acute myocardial infarction.
Required Qualifications
- For those enrolled in a nursing program, the incumbent has three months from program completion to obtain an RN license; otherwise, a current CNA certification is required.
- Individuals with an RN license must also maintain CNA certification if employed beyond three months.
- Must obtain a current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system within 30 days of hire.
- Must have either current certification as a Nursing Assistant with the State of Utah or completion of the first round of clinical with current enrollment in an approved nursing education program.
- Demonstrated ability to perform essential job functions, including effective communication and customer service skills in a busy clinical environment.
- Proficiency in using multi-line phone systems and the hospital paging system.
- Ability to initiate appropriate actions during emergency or crisis situations.
