Research Engineer
Job Description
RESEARCH ENGINEER - ADVANCED AI & SIMULATION SYSTEMS
$110k-$130k BASE
REMOTE ROLE - U.S. BASED
Are you interested in working on some of the most cutting-edge AI systems being built today-systems that can understand real-world environments, predict future scenarios, and even extend their own codebase?
THE COMPANY
This role sits within a quiet, invitation-only R&D group inside a larger tech organization-an elite team dedicated to pushing the boundaries of government and defense innovation. The work is not consumer-facing and not easily searchable; the group operates more like an advanced research unit than a corporate department.
You'd join a small, highly technical team building breakthrough systems in simulation, predictive modeling, and AI-driven reasoning-tools that are tested in live operational environments with real-world impact. The pace is fast, the problems are complex, and the mission is unlike anything in traditional tech.
THE ROLE
As a Research Engineer, you'll work alongside PhD-level scientists to develop next-generation AI systems that model battlefield dynamics, predict behavior, and simulate future states. This includes building LLM-powered pipelines, extending a Python-based codebase, and helping the system "learn" by rewriting its own logic.
Key responsibilities include:
- Designing and extending Python systems used for real-time simulation and prediction
- Building LLM workflows that reason about system state and generate new code
- Developing tools that model real-world behavior and future scenarios
- Collaborating with researchers and engineers to implement novel AI concepts
- Participating in on-site testing at U.S. bases (approx. 15% travel, typically in multi-week cycles)
This role blends hands-on engineering, research experimentation, and field validation of cutting-edge AI capabilities.
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
The successful candidate will have:
- Strong hands-on experience with Python
- 2+ years of professional engineering experience (5+ years of total programming preferred)
- Solid understanding of AI fundamentals or strong curiosity to learn advanced concepts
- Excellent problem-solving and communication skills
- U.S. citizenship or green card (due to government contract requirements)
Preferred experience:
- FastAPI, Docker, LLM APIs, Pydantic, or Hugging Face
- Background in simulation, metaprogramming, or ML/AI tooling
A PhD in a technical field is preferred but not required.
THE BENEFITS
- $110k-$130k base salary
- Remote role, U.S. based
- Approximately 15% domestic travel for field testing and integration events
- Opportunity to work directly with a Principal Scientist with 20+ years of AI research experience
- Highly impactful work with cutting-edge AI systems used in real-world environments
