Job Description

Position Overview

The Maryland Insurance Administration (MIA) is an independent State agency that regulates Maryland’s $49 billion insurance industry and protects consumers by monitoring and enforcing insurers’ and insurance professionals’ compliance with State law. Staff members are subject matter experts serving as resources for lawmakers, consumers, and public and private entities. Charged with licensure, financial examinations, rate reviews, and consumer protection, the agency ensures market conduct and compliance with Maryland law. This is a Special Appointment position that serves at the pleasure of the Appointing Authority.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review initial registration applications to determine if organizations should be permitted to conduct insurance-related business in Maryland.
  • Review renewal applications for businesses already authorized to transact insurance-related business and notify companies of upcoming license expiration, providing instructions and documentation for renewal.
  • Analyze financial and audited financial statements to ensure minimum surplus and capital requirements are met for continued licensing.
  • Enforce Maryland laws and regulations applicable to renewal application requirements.
  • Reconcile check deposit entries using reports from the agency’s Fiscal Services Unit and accurately process information in the SalesForce system.
  • Maintain and validate data within the SalesForce system.
  • Process and maintain records of legal documents such as writs of garnishment, subpoenas, and summonses.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Completion of 60 credit hours at an accredited college or university.
  • Experience: Two years of administrative experience in an office environment. (Additional administrative experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for up to two years of the required education.)
