Position Overview
This posting gathers interest for future internal lateral transfer opportunities for current City of Portland employees. There are openings for graphic design roles within different bureaus. In the Bureau of Development Services, the Graphic Designer II will work on a wide variety of print and digital communications, including document design, social media content, photography, and video production. In the Portland Bureau of Transportation, the graphic designer will create logos, charts, maps, presentations, and more while ensuring adherence to established branding and visual identity guidelines. Union Representation: Professional Technical Employees, Local 17 (PROTEC17).
Key Responsibilities
- Write and edit content and produce graphics for social media, web, email communications, and targeted digital messaging.
- Organize and maintain communication collateral, including design files for digital forms, brochures, presentations, signage, and more.
- Work proficiently on a Windows-based platform using advanced skills in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro or Rush), Microsoft Office, and Acrobat Pro to support document layout, PDF editing, and form creation.
- Edit and curate photos and videos, and create engaging content for social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube.
- Design email content using mass HTML email providers like GovDelivery.
- Produce logos, graphs, charts, maps, animated gifs, and PowerPoint presentations.
- Consult with clients to determine project objectives and develop design options, specifications, and production timelines.
- Coordinate production and reproduction of graphic materials and prepare final layouts for prepress.
- Provide website support using content management systems and contribute to the conceptualization of marketing and public engagement campaigns.
Required Qualifications
- Must be a current City of Portland employee meeting classification requirements (regular status with probation completed or limited duration status).
- Proven experience in independently coordinating graphic and communication projects from concept through completion under tight deadlines.
- Excellent copywriting, editing, and proofreading skills, with the ability to convey technical information through visual aids.
- Advanced proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, and related design software.
- Demonstrated commitment to equitable and accessible design practices.
- Must provide a link to an online portfolio for review during the selection process.
