Job Description

Position Overview

Provide leadership and guidance on the design of HVAC and plumbing systems for the Twin Cities campus. The role involves oversight of mechanical equipment and piping systems (including steam, chilled water, potable water, sanitary sewer, and natural gas) while ensuring proper maintenance and energy efficiency. The incumbent offers mechanical engineering expertise for construction and repair projects within University of Minnesota Facilities Management (FM) Operations and Construction. Location: Twin Cities, Minnesota. Schedule: Full-Time Regular.

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsibilities: Develop and prepare designs of moderate to high complexity for remodeling projects in existing University of Minnesota Twin Cities Campus buildings.
  • Prepare HVAC and plumbing system construction drawings and specifications, including for ductwork, piping, energy recovery, laboratory exhaust, and domestic plumbing systems.
  • Coordinate and review designs for code compliance and University standards with project managers, trades, and external consultants.
  • Provide technical support for maintenance, repair, and installation of new systems and assist in troubleshooting utility and facility issues.
  • Lead interdisciplinary project teams, assign work, and ensure projects are completed in a timely manner while meeting established quality requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited college or university.
  • Experience Required: At least six years of progressively responsible experience in project design, drawing review, technical evaluation, and troubleshooting in HVAC and plumbing systems for existing buildings.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD for preparing sketches and drawings; familiarity with REVIT is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply and interpret construction standards and building code requirements.
  • Strong communication, technical writing, and teamwork skills with the capability to lead and coordinate project teams.
