Job Description

Position Overview

The Walters Art Museum is one of America’s most distinctive museums, forging connections between people and art from cultures around the world and spanning seven millennia. Located in Baltimore’s Mount Vernon neighborhood, the museum is free for all and is home to 36,000 art objects displayed across five historic buildings. Serving as educators and storytellers, the Walters supports public education, community engagement, and cultural dialogue.

In the role of Digital Marketing Associate, you will work under the direction of the Senior Manager of Communications to create high-quality digital content across interactive social media posts, email marketing, and multimedia projects including podcast episodes. You will collaborate with a goal-oriented team and external departments to tell compelling stories that drive audience engagement, attendance, and support for the museum.

Key Responsibilities

  • Tell compelling stories about the Walters on social media platforms through daily text, photo, and short-form video posts using a consistent and engaging brand voice.
  • Recommend strategies across social media platforms and other digital marketing channels to amplify museum initiatives, including exhibitions, programming, and fundraising.
  • Collaborate with team members to integrate social media and email marketing into departmental and institutional goals.
  • Grow and manage an online community of art lovers across platforms (e.g., Facebook, X, Instagram, YouTube, Threads) through organic and paid campaigns.
  • Maintain a consistent brand identity across all digital channels in alignment with the museum’s strategic goals.
  • Work individually and with the Videographer to conceptualize and film short-form video content for Meta Reels.
  • Collaborate with the Senior Manager of Communications, Content Writer, and IT Specialist to execute episodes of the museum’s podcast, Free Admissions.
  • Produce email marketing materials that inspire interaction, donations, and increased attendance.
  • Monitor the news cycle and utilize digital media tools to amplify stories that align with the museum’s strategic priorities.
  • Track online conversations related to the Walters Art Museum and draft or adapt content to engage diverse audiences.
  • Stay current with digital trends and apply insights to enhance communications strategies.
  • Analyze social media and email marketing metrics in collaboration with the museum-wide Metrics Team and generate reports for internal stakeholders.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 3 years of digital marketing experience, either on a full-time or freelance basis.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain social media communities on platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube.
  • Outstanding written and visual storytelling skills.
  • Experience and knowledge in video and audio storytelling.
  • Excellent listening and verbal communication skills.
  • Comfortable both behind and in front of the camera, with the ability to coach colleagues as needed.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to be diplomatic, maintain confidentiality, and balance multiple priorities.
  • Proven ability to work under tight deadlines, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and adapt to shifting priorities.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated flexibility working within a dynamic and fast-moving, agile organization.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficiency using Sprout or other social media scheduling and metrics platforms.
  • Proficiency using Mailchimp or other email marketing software.
  • Proficiency with graphic design and video editing software including InDesign, Photoshop, and Final Cut Pro.

Benefits & Perks

  • Salary: $52,238
  • Schedule: Monday to Friday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m. (attendance at some museum weeknight and weekend events required)
