Job Description

Position Overview

The Director of Internal Audit is responsible for ensuring an effective internal audit function is in place, while adding value and improving institutional operations, risk management, control, and governance processes. This position is independent of management and reports directly to the Audit Committee of the Board of Directors for HomeTrust Bancshares and HomeTrust Bank. Oversight responsibilities include providing risk‐based, independent, objective, and reliable assurance advice to assist the Corporation in meeting its strategic goals. The role has authority to review all areas as specified in the Internal Audit Charter and is responsible for maintaining effective relationships with external auditors and examiners, ensuring compliance with SEC as well as federal and state banking laws and regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement internal audit strategies, budgets, plans, and policies to evaluate internal controls.
  • Monitor the integrity and effectiveness of financial reporting processes and identify potential financial and operational risks.
  • Manage the execution of the audit plan, including performing audits, follow-up reviews, and communicating audit findings and recommendations.
  • Oversee the management of the Corporation’s whistleblower program and ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
  • Coordinate with external auditors, regulatory bodies, and other assurance service providers to ensure comprehensive audit coverage.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to senior management and the Audit Committee by providing objective insights and recommendations.
  • Lead, recruit, and mentor internal audit staff while promoting continuous professional development.

Required Qualifications

  • B.S. or B.A. degree in Accounting, Finance or a relevant field.
  • At least 10 years of internal audit experience, including management roles.
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in financial services or public accounting.
  • Extensive knowledge of accounting, auditing, and bank laws and regulations.
  • Ability to develop audit plans aligned with organizational goals and risk appetite.
  • Strong analytical, leadership, and communication skills.
  • High ethical standards with proven capability to handle confidential information.
  • Willingness to travel as necessary and maintain a significant presence in Asheville (working 3-5 days per month on-site).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products.

Preferred Qualifications

  • MBA
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and/or Certified Internal Auditor certifications
  • Public accounting experience in financial services
  • Experience and proficiency with Audit Board software
