Under general supervision, this role performs advanced automotive and equipment repair work on a variety of city vehicles and equipment – including trucks, tractors, mowers, backhoes, loaders, graders, and more. The incumbent is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining vehicles using computerized diagnostic tools and specialized equipment while upholding excellent service standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Diagnoses, repairs, and performs maintenance on city vehicles by using computerized diagnostic equipment.
- Handles basic care tasks such as oil changes, tune-ups, and tire rotations.
- Disassembles and reassembles parts; removes defective components as necessary.
- Utilizes testing equipment to ensure repairs and maintenance are effective.
- Repairs and services a wide array of vehicles and equipment including trucks, motorcycles, bulldozers, backhoes, graders, and others.
- Employs common hand tools like sockets, wrenches, and pliers for various repair tasks.
- Conducts major and minor repairs on heavy-duty diesel engines, pneumatic systems, and automatic transmissions.
- Services air conditioning, heating units, and other coach systems.
- Uses electric arc/acetylene welding outfits or machine shop equipment for cutting, brazing, and welding tasks.
- Performs minor body work and maintains simple records of work performed and materials used.
- Supervises and instructs apprentices and helpers when required.
- Operates tow trucks to service, repair, and retrieve disabled vehicles in the field.
- Drives department vehicles and operates heavy equipment such as lifts and air tools as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or G.E.D.
- Education equivalent to completing two years, with preference for graduation from a four-year trade or vocational high school offering courses in general shop and automotive repair.
- Three years of experience in repairing and rebuilding gasoline and/or diesel vehicles or completion of an approved four-year automotive repair apprenticeship; preferably with additional experience in construction, maintenance, or other special purpose vehicles.
- Valid State of Michigan Operator License along with a valid Automotive Service Excellence Certification in the appropriate category (Automotive and Light Truck or Medium Heavy Truck); candidates must have at least one current certification and obtain any outstanding certifications within six months of hire.
- Must obtain a State of Michigan Driver or Chauffeur License with Group A Commercial Driver License endorsement and Airbrake qualification (and a P endorsement for Department of Transportation placement).
- Must meet physical standards prescribed by the Michigan State Police Motor Carrier Division and hold a current Medical Examiner's Certificate certifying physical fitness.
- Must be able to provide common automotive repair tools and be subject to a Criminal Background Investigation as required.
