Wescom Solutions provides systems engineering, construction management, and operations support services to the rail transit industry. We help transit authorities enhance their system capabilities, capital program execution, and operational efficiencies. We are seeking an Overhead Contact System (OCS) Engineer who will be responsible for the design of systems for high-speed rail, commuter rail, light rail, streetcar, and electrified bus systems throughout the United States. This role, based anywhere in California with travel as needed, is a unique opportunity to make a real impact in a flexible, creative, and dynamic work environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design OCS layout and determine wire tensions for light rail, commuter rail, streetcar (with pantograph) and electrified buses with trolley poles.
  • Generate design reports for all phases including new OCS implementations and modifications to existing systems.
  • Develop layout plans, wire profiles, and support structures such as cantilevers, portals, head spans, OCS hardware, as well as grounding and bonding systems.
  • Conduct pole and foundation loading calculations, tension assessments, and analyze wire sag and rise conditions.
  • Perform technical reviews of designs provided by other team members.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Participate in project implementation phases including planning, scope generation, installation, testing and commissioning, cutover, record drawing reviews, and final reporting.
  • Collaborate with technical teams (Traction Power, Communications, Signals & Train Control, Electrical, Mechanical, Structural, Architectural, Trackwork, and Civil) to coordinate and design interfaces.
  • Lead technical interactions with clients, operations, and key stakeholders.
  • Support cost estimates, project schedules, and budget forecasts.
  • Participate in project pursuit efforts.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to junior team members.
  • Manage System Interfaces and develop Interface Control Documents (ICDs).
  • Support System Engineering and Assurance efforts such as Requirements Management, Verification & Validation, RAM, Safety Assurance, Quality Management, and EMI/EMC.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor Degree in a relevant field.
  • 4+ years of experience in OCS design for public transit rail projects.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 6+ years of relevant experience with EIT and a goal of obtaining a Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Experience with designing OCS for 600 to 1500 volt dc rail systems as well as 12 to 25 kilovolt AC systems.
  • Experience in OCS Testing & Commissioning, Cutover, Interface Management, and Operations & Maintenance.
  • Working knowledge of codes and standards applicable to rail projects.
  • Experience operating within a multi-disciplinary project structure with responsibility for OCS design.
  • Familiarity with tension and pole/foundation load calculations.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD or MicroStation.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently with limited direct supervision.
  • Strong multitasking abilities to manage concurrent projects.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to lead discussions with senior project staff, partners, clients, and suppliers.
