Job Description
Position Overview
Fairview is seeking a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) Technical Lead for the Acute Care Laboratory at M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Medical Center-East Bank. This full-time day shift position (Monday-Friday, 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM, including every third weekend and occasional holidays) plays a pivotal role in performing complex diagnostic and therapeutic testing while providing guidance, troubleshooting, and mentoring in a large, fast-paced laboratory environment known for its excellence and award-winning service.
Key Responsibilities
- Obtain specimens by following established guidelines, verify patient identity, and assess specimen integrity.
- Perform a wide variety of complex diagnostic and therapeutic testing, including waived, moderate, or high complexity tests as defined by CLIA '88.
- Develop new methods, execute instrument correlation, and validate testing procedures.
- Direct workflow in the absence of a supervisor, providing troubleshooting and problem-solving support.
- Participate in laboratory performance improvement initiatives and ensure adherence to quality assurance and compliance standards.
- Document deviations, reagent/test kit checks, and QC outliers while taking corrective actions as necessary.
- Orient and mentor new employees and students, ensuring proper training and progress monitoring.
Required Qualifications
- Baccalaureate or higher degree in a related laboratory field (or equivalent) from an accredited college/university with appropriate lab practicum.
- Degree in chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science or medical technology with transcript verification.
- Alternatively, 16 semester hours in biology (including microbiology) and 16 semester hours in chemistry (including organic or biochemistry) with transcript verification, or a transcript evaluation verifying equivalency to a U.S. Baccalaureate degree.
- Master’s degree in molecular biology, biotechnology, chemistry, biology, or a related field with documentation, if applicable.
- 1 year of laboratory training/experience in high complexity testing for candidates with a baccalaureate degree (or 2 years for those qualifying by baccalaureate degree and semester hours).
- Must possess or be eligible for an appropriate Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) approved laboratory certification (e.g., ASCP, ASCPi, AMT – MLS/MT, or HEW Medical Technologist certification) within 1 year.
