Job Description

Position Overview

An ultrasound technician is a professional individual trained in an academic and clinical environment by an accredited institution that prepares students for national registry. The scope of practice includes procedures, acts and processes permitted by law for which the individual has received training and experience, and has demonstrated competency by completing ARDMS certification – the standard of practice in ultrasound.

Key Responsibilities

  • Independently operate ultrasound equipment to produce diagnostic quality images, evaluate the acquired images, and communicate findings with radiologists and/or medical professionals.
  • Effectively work with the USMD imaging team by managing the ultrasound schedule, reporting equipment failures, performing appropriate QA procedures, and practicing a high level of medical ethics.
  • Perform procedures at various USMD locations in the Dallas Fort Worth area, including imaging centers and clinic locations in Fort Worth, Arlington, Mansfield, Mid-Cities, Denton, and Las Colinas (locations subject to change as the organization grows).
  • Facilitate diagnostic results by obtaining, reviewing, and integrating patient history, physical examination findings, and supporting clinical data.
  • Comfort patients by explaining procedures, assisting with proper positioning, and, if bilingual, acting as a translator.
  • Ensure accurate test results by selecting the proper transducer, adjusting equipment settings according to test specifications, and maneuvering the transducer while monitoring the display screen.
  • Maintain high diagnostic quality by following operating instructions, performing quality control checks, troubleshooting equipment breakdowns, managing supplies, executing preventive maintenance, and ensuring proper backup of software and data.
  • Uphold imaging department standards by establishing, following, and enforcing protocols.
  • Enhance sonography and company reputation by taking ownership of new and different requests and exploring opportunities to add value.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality at all times.
  • Perform scanning as needed.
  • Exhibit professional and courteous conduct with coworkers, patients, physicians, vendors, and others at all times.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience with OB/GYN exams; proficient in obstetrical ultrasound and GYN exams (both abdominal and transvaginal).
  • Bachelor of Science in Diagnostic Medical Sonography or other health-related degree is desirable, or an Associate degree/graduate from an Ultrasound program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Current certification by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) in appropriate specialties is required; must be CME compliant and BLS certified.
