This position provides assistive care to patients by facilitating the efficient delivery of patient care, supporting licensed staff in rendering basic healthcare and clerical functions, and administering medications within the scope of practice as permitted by state law.

Key Responsibilities
- Prepares patients for examinations and diagnostic procedures by recording vital signs and obtaining medical history.
- Reports all observed patient concerns and changes in condition to licensed staff.
- Performs CLIA waived lab tests as directed and reports results appropriately.
- Performs additional skills such as suture removal, straight catheterization, and administering injections (IM, Subq, and intradermal).
- Acts as a chaperone during patient examinations and assists with procedures.
- Monitors and cleans patient examination areas while managing supplies and equipment needs.
- Handles telephones, message forwarding, and scheduling of appointments, procedures, and diagnostic tests under the direction of licensed staff.
- Assists with routine clerical functions including filing, chart retrieval, and entering charges for billing.
- Attends mandatory education sessions (infection prevention, safety, CPR, equipment usage) as required by hospital policies.
- May perform patient phlebotomy and apply leads for diagnostic procedures under supervision.
- May assist in patient and family education by providing health information and educational materials.
- May assist with patient transportation to ancillary departments or inpatient units as needed.
- May instruct in Basic Life Support (BLS) and perform IV access as needed.
- Works rotating schedules, which may include variable hours, weekends, nights, and holidays to support a 24/7 complex health system; regular, reliable attendance is essential.
Required Qualifications
- Verifiable completion of one (1) of the following:
State approved EMT course; One (1) year of Medical Assistant experience in an ambulatory care clinic or other healthcare setting; completion of a Medical Assisting education program; or University Hospital Medical Assistant certification program. - Licenses Required: Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system (to be obtained within 30 days of hire) and any additional licenses as determined by the hiring department.
- Demonstrated availability to work variable and rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays in a 24/7 patient care environment.
- Ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined above.
- Strong human relations and effective communication skills.
- Capability to demonstrate proficiency in clinic-specific specialty skills within six weeks of hire (post basic competency testing).
- Ability to cope with the physical demands of prolonged standing, patient handling, and operating equipment.
