Job Description

Position Overview

Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta is one of the nation’s leading children’s hospitals. In this role, you will oversee invasive procedures and techniques involved in the collection of blood specimens from patients for laboratory diagnosis and treatment of diseases. You will perform clinical laboratory duties while promoting a lean work culture and continually seeking process improvements to ensure patient safety and excellent service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collect laboratory specimens properly and safely from patients (newborn through age 21), using excellent customer service and age-specific approaches.
  • Perform blood collection procedures for complex tests, including oral glucose tolerance tests, blood culture collections, and blood transfusion medicine specimens.
  • Conduct sweat collections adhering to Cystic Fibrosis Foundation standards.
  • Utilize universal standard precautions and follow varying isolation criteria during blood collection.
  • Support specimen processing by preparing samples for testing and managing specimen data in the laboratory information system.
  • Verify patient identity using two patient identifiers and prepare patients in a developmentally appropriate manner.
  • Engage in process improvement by identifying inefficiencies and unsafe practices, and by promoting lean principles.
  • Perform necessary clerical duties related to specimen collection and patient care, including research using the laboratory computer system.
  • Uphold patient confidentiality and privacy as dictated by HIPAA regulations.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot laboratory information system logs and take patient access duties when required.

Required Qualifications

  • 2 years of experience in phlebotomy, including venipuncture on newborns through adolescent age groups and laboratory specimen processing.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • No professional certifications required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to foster effective working relationships with colleagues, subordinates, and superiors.

Preferred Qualifications

  • American Society for Clinical Pathology phlebotomy certification or equivalent.
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
  • 1 year of experience working in a pediatric hospital setting.
