Job Description

Position Overview

Deckhands are primarily responsible for the safety of fellow crewmembers, the vessel, the cargo, and the environment. They perform tasks associated with building and breaking tow, as well as vessel cleanliness and maintenance in all weather conditions. Residency Requirements: Inexperienced deckhands (0–11 months of verifiable experience) must live within 2 hours driving distance of Point Pleasant, WV or Houston, PA; experienced deckhands (1+ years of verifiable experience) are considered from all locations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build and break tow effectively.
  • Inspect, correct, and/or notify others of any conditions that affect the safety of individuals or cargo.
  • Handle rigging during tow building, locking, and landing work; ensure proper fitting of cables, wires, and lines and use appropriate tools for adjustments.
  • Safely secure barges with cables, wires, and lines while being environmentally conscious.
  • Perform basic vessel maintenance, including painting, cleaning, and basic engine room upkeep.
  • Communicate clearly on a VHF radio and implement instructions provided by the vessel Captain.
  • Effectively use all safety equipment as required by company policies.
  • Maintain personal hygiene and ensure the cleanliness and safety of your bunkroom while collaborating on public areas.
  • Perform assigned firefighting, man overboard, and abandon ship duties as outlined on the Station Bill.

Required Qualifications

  • For inexperienced deckhands: must live within 2 hours driving distance of Point Pleasant, WV or Houston, PA.
  • For experienced deckhands: all locations considered.
  • Strictly follow all CTC policies and adhere to USCG and federal regulations.
  • Must possess or have the ability to obtain Transportation Worker’s Identification Card (TWIC).
  • Pass a pre-employment drug test and comply with random DOT testing requirements.
  • Pass a pre-employment physical.

Preferred Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Prior experience in a similar position within the marine transportation industry.
  • Prior experience in a safety-sensitive position.

Physical Requirements

  • Traverse boats, barges, and tows for a minimum of 2 miles per day, including on wet or slick surfaces.
  • Transport equipment weighing 60–100 pounds up to 1000 feet.
  • Ascend or descend a 90° ladder up to 40 feet.
  • Move, transport, and position equipment weighing up to 100 pounds.
  • Maneuver through an 18-inch diameter hatch.
  • Move at least 2 feet horizontally and vertically.
  • Maintain constant communication with crew members.
  • Recognize and identify distant objects and estimate distances.
  • Work continuously in outdoor weather conditions.
  • Endure work shifts of a minimum of 12 hours, which could extend to 15 hours.
