Position Overview

The Pharmacy Technician 1 at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois, assists licensed pharmacists by preparing, filling, and labeling medications for a diverse patient population—from neonatal to geriatric. Key Responsibilities

  • Active participation in the Pharmacy Department Technician Career Ladder.
  • Identify various classifications of medications, including dosage forms and routes of administration.
  • Execute pharmacy workflows for first doses, Pyxis refills, cart fills, medication returns, and disposal.
  • Prepare non-sterile compounding and packaging, including drawing up oral syringes and compounding oral suspensions.
  • Manage inventory, storage, and supply maintenance while troubleshooting pharmacy equipment and technical issues.
  • Collaborate with healthcare professionals, answer phones for missing medication requests, and participate in departmental committees and educational activities.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Current State of Illinois Pharmacy Technician licensure.
  • Completion of an ACPE/ASHP accredited pharmacy technician training program if licensed on or after January 1, 2024, including 500 hours of on‐the‐job training covering key pharmacy operations.
  • PTCB (Pharmacy Technician Certification Board) certification or ability to achieve certification by the second license renewal.
  • Strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to perform arithmetic calculations.
  • Willingness to work extended hours (up to 10% travel may be required) and adapt to scheduled shift changes.
  • Ability to handle light physical tasks such as lifting files, opening filing cabinets, and occasional bending or standing on a stool.
