Location: Cleveland, TN
Health, Safety & Environmental Specialist at Mars Wrigley – CLV Site
This onsite position supports a 24/7 manufacturing site. The Site HSE Specialist reports to the Site HSE Manager and is responsible for the development, management, and execution of Safety, Environmental & Security programs within the confines of the manufacturing site. This critical role provides technical assistance in implementing workplace HSE programs, ensuring compliance, and supporting day-to-day operations. Successful candidates must be able to flex schedule as needed to meet site requirements and understand the interrelationship between safety, productivity, profits, associate engagement, and retention.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain a continuous “audit ready” state of compliance with company and governmental HSE standards.
- Develop and deploy Company HSE standards as applicable to the site.
- Ensure timely Environmental Permit Compliance including Air, Stormwater, Water, Spill Control, and Wastewater protocols.
- Manage hazardous waste activities to ensure 100% compliance with regulations.
- Update and maintain onsite environmental manuals per Mars standards and schedule.
- Deploy site-specific HSE programs and plans to position the site as best-in-class.
- Deliver training and coaching so that all site associates understand HSE expectations.
- Implement risk assessment and prediction processes with appropriate mitigation measures.
- Investigate all HSE incidents, perform root cause analysis and drive corrective actions.
- Collaborate with Occupational Health and Wellness Management to ensure effective injury case management.
- Provide technical expertise and coaching for capital project reviews and risk management.
- Use a data-driven approach to manage and adjust site HSE strategies and communicate performance.
- Collaborate with temporary labor management to meet HSE goals.
- Lead risk reduction reviews of process hazards and combustible dust issues.
- Ensure the Plant Emergency Organization is prepared for HSE emergencies.
- Oversee Industrial Hygiene Risk improvement including ergonomics, respirable dust, noise, and chemical exposure monitoring.
- Coordinate Employee Engagement Committees to enhance safety and environmental performance.
- Manage the Contractor Safety program, ensuring proper oversight of contractor activities.
- Oversee site security requirements, execute security training, and manage access control procedures.
- Support the Mars Global Security Program via implementation of best practices.
- Manage risk management activities associated with asset conservation and property loss control.
- Collaborate with third-party risk control experts to maintain favorable insurance ratings.
Required Qualifications
- HS Diploma AND 5 years of manufacturing experience in implementing safety, environmental, and/or industrial hygiene programs, OR a Bachelor’s degree in safety, industrial hygiene, environmental science, or a related discipline.
- Demonstrated leadership in driving safety or environmental systems in a manufacturing environment.
- Strong knowledge of safety regulations and expertise with EPA, OSHA, and DOT standards.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with hazard recognition, behavioral-based safety, job hazard analysis, and Process Hazards Analysis.
- Basic knowledge of food manufacturing processes and GMP.
