Position Overview
Oak Street Health is seeking a Medical Scribe to support primary care providers with clinical documentation so they can focus on delivering exceptional patient care. In this role, you will join daily huddles, document patient encounters in real time, assist with assigning ICD-10 and CPT codes, and help our providers identify care gaps using our value-based care model. This is an excellent opportunity for pre-med track individuals or those pursuing careers in Health Informatics, Public Health, Healthcare Administration, Medical Coding, and related fields. The position is full time (approximately 40–45 hours per week), with anticipated weekly hours of 40.
Compensation: The typical base hourly rate ranges between $17.00 and $25.65, depending on experience, education, geography, and other factors.
Key Responsibilities
- Document Patient Encounters (80%): Join providers in the exam room, document structured notes (history, assessment, plan, and physical exam), assign appropriate CPT and ICD-10 codes, prepare after visit summaries, and consult with providers to ensure accurate documentation.
- Clinical Documentation Improvement (10%): Request and review medical records, leverage population health tools, support daily huddles and documentation reviews, and advise providers on documentation opportunities.
- Administrative Support (10%): Place orders and referrals, manage miscellaneous tasks, and support the care team with additional documentation-related responsibilities.
Required Qualifications
- Knowledge of medical terminology and common medications (acquired through a pre-medical degree or prior clinical experience) [required]
- Advanced listening and communication skills [required]
- Strong computer literacy and ability to learn new technical workflows [required]
- Ability to adapt to new workflows and quickly learn new concepts and skills [required]
- Ability to take direction and work collaboratively as part of a patient care team [required]
- Excellent job attendance and capability to work in-person in our clinics [required]
- Commitment to at least 1 year in the role (with 2+ years being ideal) [required]
- Ability to work approximately 40-45 hours per week during clinic hours [required]
- Compliance with hospital and Oak Street Health policies, including HIPAA requirements [required]
- US work authorization [required]
- Fluency in Spanish, Polish, Russian, or other languages as indicated by the communities served [required where indicated]
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior clinical experience (including shadowing and/or volunteering) [strongly preferred]
- Prior scribe or transcription experience [preferred but not required]
- Ability to type 70+ words per minute [strongly preferred]
