Job Description
Position Overview
This position provides end user technical support at police stations, administrative sites, and operational sites for desktop/laptop computer equipment and related IT systems. The candidate will serve as a technical liaison between support staff, the Information Technology Division, outside vendors, and DIT staff, providing installation, troubleshooting, training, and detailed system documentation. Salary: $65,474.66 - $109,124.29 Annually Location: FAIRFAX (EJ28), VA.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform cable routing and termination, equipment installation and configuration, labeling, and documentation.
- Provide routine support for network and telecommunications functions.
- Respond to and prioritize user requests by offering guidance and assistance.
- Add and delete users as needed.
- Develop and implement documentation and procedures to prevent issues.
- Assist the help desk in problem determination and resolution.
- Set up, install, and test hardware and peripherals at user sites.
- Install network operating systems and standard software programs.
- Support installation of complex software and equipment.
- Provide basic one-on-one training to users.
- Maintain system records and technical documentation.
- Participate in managing network/telecommunication system upgrades, expansions, and equipment exchanges.
- Review new technology and recommend network/telecommunication system modifications.
- Maintain an accurate inventory of hardware and software.
- Provide assistance to other staff as needed.
Required Qualifications
- Some knowledge of data and voice communications protocols and industry standards (e.g., internet, intranet, internet security, frame relay, data network).
- Familiarity with communications network management and router configuration.
- Understanding of hardware and software, cabling, power requirements, and ancillary equipment related to network operations.
- Ability to work in a PC/network environment and install system hardware/software.
- Strong planning, scheduling, coordination, and project management skills.
- Effective communication skills, both oral and written, with the ability to translate technical terminology for non-technical audiences.
- Possess an associate degree in computer science, electrical engineering, electronics, or a related field; plus, two years of network/telecommunications experience; or a bachelor’s degree in similar fields.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in the public safety sector (e.g., support of law enforcement, fire, EMS, or emergency communications operations).
- Proven track record providing hardware/software support for PCs, networking equipment, and end-user systems.
- Experience installing and deploying personal computers including network cards, drives, operating systems, and application software.
- Experience in providing end-user training (classroom or one-on-one) and creating technical documentation.
- Experience maintaining Windows-based physical or virtual servers including configuration, software installation, and patching.
- Experience managing hardware/software inventory and coordinating vendor returns or replacements.
- CompTIA Network+ or CompTIA A+ certification is strongly preferred.
