Position Overview
Are you looking to make an impact on the physical, emotional and cultural needs of patients and their families? Join our team as a Post Partum RN in the Birthplace at the University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital! We support not only women in our culturally diverse community, but also those across the state who may need additional attention due to a high risk pregnancy or fetal diagnosis. With our partnership with the University of MN, the Birthplace supports the development of student nurses and residents through onsite observation and training – further enhancing evidence based practice and ongoing professional learning.
In the Newborn Family Care Center-Postpartum, you will work in a unit featuring 24 beds in Mom/Baby private rooms, couplet care with an average of 3 couplets on day/evening shifts and 4 couplets on the night shift, a care delivery team composed of RN and NST/NA, opportunities for professional growth (including certifications and/or IBCLC), on-unit inpatient lactation support, and newborn IV antibiotic administration.
Schedule: 60 hours every two weeks on the night shift, 12-hour shifts and every third weekend.
Key Responsibilities
- Assesses patient needs and identifies expected nursing outcomes.
- Involves the patient, family and other health team members in gathering data.
- Uses an ongoing, systematic process to gather relevant information (biological, psychological, spiritual and social aspects) from patient and family.
- Analyzes data and information to identify potential risks, prioritize needs and determine priority problems.
- Identifies outcomes that are age appropriate, culturally appropriate, realistic and attainable, and validates these with patient, family and other health team members.
- Documents data and identified outcomes.
- Implements nursing interventions based on the plan of care.
- Provides care according to the plan, and in accordance with all relevant policies, procedures and nursing practice guidelines.
- Coordinates nursing care with the care of all other health team members.
- Initiates age and culturally appropriate measures to support and meet patient needs while achieving expected outcomes.
- Initiates patient/family teaching as appropriate to age, readiness to learn and available resources.
- Collaborates, consults, or makes referrals if unable to perform safely and independently.
- Delegates direct and indirect patient care activities to appropriate personnel based on needs, condition, potential for risk/harm, complexity of the skill and predictability of the outcome.
- Assures all actions are based on scientific, ethical or ecological principles; proven effectiveness; past experience; practice standards; patient/family requests and values; or, legal parameters.
- Uses the full range of therapeutic modalities to support and augment the healing process, moving from least intensive and invasive to more, depending on need and context.
- Documents interventions according to practice guidelines.
- Anticipates, recognizes and responds to emergent situations.
Required Qualifications
- MN Registered Nurse (RN) License
- Basic Life Support (American Heart Assoc or Red Cross)
- Current NRP certification required within 6 months of hire
- 2 years of nursing OB/Medical surgical/Pediatric Nursing experience
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelors Degree in Nursing or BAN
- 3 years of OB/Medical surgical experience

An individual's pay rate may be influenced by factors such as FTE, skills, knowledge, educational background, and qualifying experience.
