Job Description

Senior Mechanical Engineer (PE) - Rail & Transit Facilities

Confidential client | National engineering consultancy | Hybrid (Washington, DC Metro)

The Opportunity

A nationally respected, multi‑discipline engineering consultancy is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer (PE) to support complex rail and transit facilities across the U.S. This team delivers resilient, code‑driven mechanical systems for some of the most demanding transportation environments-stations, tunnels, yards, and enclosed/underground facilities.

This is a hands‑on senior technical role with design ownership, real influence over system concepts, and the chance to mentor junior engineers while staying close to production work.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Design HVAC systems for rail and transit environments, including tunnel and platform ventilation, smoke control, emergency ventilation, and enclosed spaces
  • Engineer plumbing systems (domestic water, sanitary, storm, sump, and specialty systems) for transit facilities
  • Design and coordinate fire protection systems (sprinkler, standpipe, fire pumps, suppression systems) aligned with life‑safety requirements
  • Perform mechanical calculations, load analyses, equipment sizing, and energy modeling inputs
  • Define control narratives, sequences of operation, and operating modes for mechanical systems
  • Produce technical specifications, equipment schedules, and material selections
  • Prepare detailed design drawings and calculations using Revit (MEP), AutoCAD, and industry tools (e.g., Carrier HAP, Trane TRACE, fire protection software)
  • Review contractor submittals, respond to RFIs, and provide construction‑phase technical support
  • Coordinate closely with civil, structural, electrical, and communications disciplines
  • Support PMs with budgets, cost estimates, schedules, proposals, and client presentations
  • Provide informal technical direction and mentorship to designers and junior engineers

What We're Looking For

Required

  • PE license
  • BS in Mechanical Engineering
  • 8+ years of mechanical design experience within consulting engineering
  • Experience leading design tasks and coordinating multi‑disciplinary teams
  • Strong working knowledge of IBC, NFPA, ASHRAE, and applicable local codes
  • Proficiency in Revit (MEP) and common mechanical analysis tools
  • Comfortable working directly with clients, contractors, and vendors

Why This Role

  • High‑impact work on rail and transit infrastructure that directly affects public safety and mobility
  • Strong technical culture with an emphasis on design quality, reliability, and constructability
  • Senior role that stays hands‑on, not diluted into pure management
  • Hybrid flexibility with a stable, long‑term project backlog
