This Financial Analyst II role will have direct involvement in providing financial planning and analysis support for the Customer Products & Services organizations. The Analyst II position provides an opportunity to gain a unique view of Duke Energy’s businesses outside of the normal regulated utility operations by supporting organizations that directly drive earnings. Employees work in a self-directed manner with guidance as needed, collaborating closely with business partners to analyze and report variances, trends, and plans. Key activities include financial planning, budget development, and monthly, year-to-date, and year-end financial analysis. The role involves partnering with business representatives at all levels to provide the expertise and assistance required for financial success, including cost management accounting, financial reporting, and developing practical solutions for emerging challenges.
Key Responsibilities
- This role is a key contributor in the financial planning, budgeting & analysis activities with additional opportunities to work on special projects.
- Partners with business lines reporting to VP leaders to provide solutions to all financial and accounting needs.
- Provides technical and functional expertise in working with business partners to analyze financial performance, coordinate special projects, and assist in establishing new products and lines of business.
- Significantly contributes to the month-end close process, which includes but is not limited to:
- Posting journal entries and accruals
- Performing account reconciliations
- Proactively analyzing financial results for abnormalities
- Providing timely financial results with accurate variance explanations, watchlist items, and projection changes to upper management
- Supports the ROCR and P&L reporting processes.
- Responds promptly to ad-hoc, regulatory, audit, and other data requests.
- Assists with the budget and business planning process by communicating budget guidance, assumptions, timelines, and preparing presentation materials as needed.
- Builds relationships and promotes effective communication with business partners and Finance peers.
- Develops an in-depth knowledge of the supported business areas to anticipate financial and accounting needs.
- Acts as a liaison between the business and other finance and accounting organizations to resolve outstanding issues.
- Coordinates and manages various projects and initiatives throughout normal business operations.
- Identifies, develops, and implements continuous process improvement opportunities.
- Consolidates and rolls-up financial results and analysis for executive-level reporting.
- Supports the development of tools and practices to enhance projection accuracy.
- Actively identifies and fulfills business partner needs with a sense of urgency, taking ownership until issues are resolved.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelors degree with a major in Accounting/Finance or a related discipline
- At least two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in a related field
- Possesses and applies fundamental accounting and finance concepts, practices, and procedures
- Experience with financial applications (e.g., PeopleSoft, HFM, PowerPlan, etc.) and query tools (WebI)
- Proficiency in Microsoft products such as Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
Preferred Qualifications
- CPA or working toward CPA
- Advanced degree, preferably in Accounting
- Four (4) or more years of professional work-related experience
- Prior experience supporting business FP&A efforts
- Knowledge of financial applications used by Duke Energy FP&A such as Power Pivot, PeopleSoft, Hyperion, SAS business rules, PowerPlan, OneStream, and Reporting Trees
- Experience interfacing effectively with VP-level and higher leadership
- Experience with regulatory, non-regulatory, utility, and Energy Efficiency programs
- Additional experience with financial applications (e.g., PeopleSoft FMIS, Power Plant) and query tools (Business Objects)
- Proficiency in Microsoft products such as Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
- Master's in Accounting or MBA
- Professional certification (e.g., CPA, CFA)
