Position Overview
SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, one of the nation’s leading metropolitan medical centers and the only academic medical center in Brooklyn, is seeking a full-time Nursing Assistant 2, Operating Room. In this role, you will provide direct hands-on care in a dynamic healthcare environment while assisting with patient hygiene, simple treatments, and supporting licensed clinical staff.
Key Responsibilities
- Performs duties similar to Nursing Assistant 1 under direction, assisting with training new staff in assigned treatment areas.
- Changes simple dressings, gives enemas, douches, and irrigations as directed.
- Applies abdominal “T” binders, hot water bottles, aqua “K” pads, ice bags, coolers, and hot/cold compresses to patients as directed.
- Assists patients in collecting urine and stool specimens, and records quantitative food/fluid intake and waste output.
- Takes vital signs – temperature, pulse rate, blood pressure, and respiration rate – and measures/records height and weight.
- Provides therapeutic baths, including sitz and fever sponge baths, and attends to patients’ hygiene and daily living needs.
- Operates specialized patient monitoring and treatment devices and inspects oxygen therapy equipment.
- Assists with movements, positioning, lifting, and transporting patients using various aids.
- Completes ancillary tasks such as transporting patients/supplies, handling laundry, and conducting limited housekeeping related to patient care.
Required Qualifications
- Non-Competitive: 1-year of satisfactory full-time experience in providing simple treatment and patient care under professional supervision.
- Possession of current certification as a New York State Certified Nursing Assistant may substitute for the required experience.
Benefits & Perks
- Compensation: $38,073 Base Salary plus $3,087 Location Pay (Full-Time 1.0FTE)
- Work Schedule: Monday to Friday; 11:00am to 8:00pm (Full-Time)
