Job Description

Position Overview

We are seeking a high-performing Mechanical Design Engineer to lead the in-house development of GM electronics design. You will be responsible for the mechanical design, development, and review of Electrical Controllers for our next generation SDV architecture. This is a Hybrid role, requiring you to report to a Metro Detroit location at least three times per week, while building strong partnerships with internal teams and external suppliers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute mechanical design of ECUs per program timing, leading to successful product launch
  • Own module HW (and in some cases SW) release
  • Design mechanical components including castings, injection moldings, stampings, seals, electrical interface, PCBA mounts, connector interface, and fastening
  • Perform design calculations, GD&T and tolerance stacks
  • Create 3D CAD and 2D CAD documentation and lead CAD reviews with stakeholders
  • Develop analysis and test plans, perform proof of concept tests and analysis
  • Lead prototyping and testing, analyze test data, and adjust mechanical designs as needed
  • Collaborate with electrical engineers and PCBA designers to integrate components into electro-mechanical systems
  • Maintain validation documentation and tracking
  • Assess and aid in selection of semi-conductors for assigned modules
  • Build partnerships with internal functional peers and Tier 1 suppliers to align on ECU design per development cycles
  • Develop virtualization technologies to accelerate and de-risk product development
  • Communicate design progress and risks to stakeholders and customers
  • Drive the mechanical design strategy for the enterprise

Required Qualifications

  • Pursuit of a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
  • Expected graduation between December 2025 and June 2026
  • Availability to work full-time (40 hours per week)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficiency in 3D CAD modeling (NX and Teamcenter preferred) and 2D drawing creation
  • Strong analytical skills and understanding of solid mechanics, material science, heat transfer, mechanism design, and manufacturing principles
  • Hands-on experience engaging with electronics manufacturers
  • Experience in the mechanical design of PCBAs, computers, or automotive electronics
  • Understanding of thermal solutions and their application
  • Knowledge of vibrational and structural analysis
  • Familiarity with ASME Y14.5-2009 dimensioning and tolerancing standards
