Job Description

Position Overview

We are seeking a skilled and experienced First Assistant Engineer to join our team on one of our state‐of‐the‐art research vessels operated by Scripps Institution of Oceanography. In this role, you will ensure the safe and efficient operation of engine room machinery and equipment, support the vessel’s scientific mission, and work with a diverse team of scientists, engineers, and mariners. This position requires an unexpired U.S. Passport and the ability to work at sea for 8–12 weeks at a time.

Compensation: Annual Full Pay Range: $108,910 - $158,646 (prorated if below 100% appointment) and Hourly Equivalent: $52.16 - $75.98. Factors such as experience, skills, knowledge, education, licensure, and certifications will influence the final offer.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain engine room machinery and equipment.
  • Stand underway watches and security watches while in port.
  • Maintain specialized fuel and water systems.
  • Provide work direction for other Marine Engineering staff.
  • Assist with loading stores and bunkering the ship.
  • Perform other duties as defined by a ship's senior officer during emergency situations.

Required Qualifications

  • In-depth knowledge of proper operation and maintenance of diesel engines for propulsion and auxiliary power, including related shipboard equipment and systems.
  • Advanced experience with engineering department machinery and tools.
  • Advanced seamanship skills including knots, line-handling, general shipboard maintenance, preparation/preservation of steel surfaces, operation of deck equipment, and winches.
  • Familiarity with university, state, federal, and international maritime practices for ship operation and maintenance.
  • Ability to operate, maintain, and repair engineering systems and emergency equipment.
  • Knowledge of federal regulations relevant to maritime operations and company/vessel safety management plans.
  • Advanced interpersonal and communication skills to establish cooperative relationships and provide work direction.
  • Proficiency with computer applications including word processing and spreadsheets.
  • Ability to interpret and use technical drawings and documentation.
  • Strong math and critical thinking skills.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent education and work experience.
  • U.S. Coast Guard First Assistant Engineer license for the related vessel.
  • U.S. Coast Guard Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW95) with lifeboat endorsement.
  • Possession of a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) issued by TSA.
  • Vessel Personnel with Designated Security Duties (VPDSD).
  • Ability to pass a physical examination and comply with U.S. Coast Guard (DOT) Chemical, Drug, and Alcohol testing requirements.
  • Successful completion of a background check as a condition of employment.
