As a Staff Engineer – Product Regulatory, you will bridge engineering excellence with international regulatory standards. You’ll guide the New Product Development process and work across global markets—including North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific—to ensure electronic products meet critical certifications (UL, CSA, CE, IECEx, ATEX). This hybrid role (3 days onsite) demands a collaborative leader who can influence cross-functional teams and drive compliance in a dynamic environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as the SME and provide technical direction/support for component material declarations and environmental compliance.
- Support New Product Development and oversee Product Regulatory Compliance for UL/CSA/CE/IECEx/ATEX applications, ensuring design meets standard requirements.
- Develop and maintain strong technical relationships with 3rd-party certifying agencies (e.g., UL, CSA, FM) to secure efficient and favorable certification outcomes.
- Interpret hazardous location standards and ensure product certifications are achieved within budget and schedule.
- Evaluate upcoming regulatory and environmental changes and recommend proactive actions for compliance.
- Attend agency meetings as needed to represent Badger Meter’s position on regulatory changes.
- Lead New Product Development or project teams through detailed design reviews to secure required certifications.
- Train development groups on best practices in electronic/electrical, mechanical, and system design for product certifications.
- Interface with corporate legal counsel to assess the impact of proposed regulatory changes.
- Define project scope, costs, schedules, and budgets for certification initiatives and ensure targets are met.
- Obtain agency certification quotations and prepare corresponding documentation.
- Develop Critical Components Lists with lead engineers for agency submittals as required.
- Coordinate the transfer of test samples and update test reports and certification documents.
- Travel up to 15% as required.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
- 7+ years of related work experience with UL, CSA, FM, IECEx, and ATEX certifications and testing.
- Intermediate proficiency with the Microsoft Software suite.
- Familiarity with Lean and related manufacturing processes.
- Knowledge of CSA/UL or CE standards as applied to electronic devices.
- Understanding of electronic circuitry/PCBs in hazardous location applications and CE (EMC/LVD) certifications.
- Ability to determine risk, define mitigation methods, and generate basic financial or business justifications.
- Excellent communication skills in English (reading, writing, and speaking).
