Position Overview
Nursing Assistant – Located in Chicago, Illinois at Rush University Medical Center (4 Kellogg Mood Disorder Unit). Work Type: Restricted Part Time (Total FTE less than 0.5). Shift: Shift 4; Work Schedule: 8 Hr (7:00 AM - 11:00 AM). Infrequent Rotation with a minimum of one weekend per month, plus holiday and weekend requirements.
Job Summary: The Nursing Assistant performs a variety of clinical and environmental tasks under the direction of the Registered Nurse. Duties require specialized training and technical skill acquired through an accredited school of nursing. Key Responsibilities
- Reports to the charge Registered Nurse for assignment of duties.
- Maintains a safe patient environment.
- Sets priorities based on patient and unit needs under the direction of the Registered Nurse.
- Participates in the implementation of individualized plans of care under RN direction.
- Assists patients with activities of daily living.
- Accurately obtains patient data and documents all care in the appropriate record.
- Performs routine procedures, treatments, and specimen collections.
- Demonstrates aseptic technique when necessary.
- Assists the Registered Nurse or physician with advanced procedures.
- Assists in the management of uncomplicated tubes and drains.
- Performs specific patient care procedures such as blood glucose testing and specimen collection.
- Demonstrates knowledge of age-specific variables and patient growth and development.
- Promptly reports changes in patient condition to the appropriate Registered Nurse.
- Assists with admission, discharge, and transport of patients.
- Transports laboratory specimens and patient belongings as required.
- Obtains blood products, supplies, and equipment as necessary.
- Demonstrates proficiency in the use of the telephone and patient call systems.
- Demonstrates proficiency in the use of EPIC.
- Demonstrates proficiency in using unit-specific monitors, pumps, and other equipment.
- Keeps patient rooms safe, orderly, and in accordance with unit routines.
- Independently orders, organizes, and restocks supplies per unit specifications.
- Replenishes patient room supplies and maintains emergency supplies.
- Communicates pertinent information to appropriate team members throughout the shift.
- Negotiates break times and communicates departure and return times per protocol.
- Demonstrates initiative and self-direction in work habits.
Required Qualifications
- Current enrollment in an accredited Baccalaureate or Masters entry-level school of nursing with passing grades in all courses upon hire and on an annual basis, or awaiting eligibility (within 3 months of graduation).
- Completed a fundamental nursing course that includes basic nursing skills such as vital signs and activities of daily living.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Successful completion of the institutional screening examination.
- Ability to solve simple problems.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills.
