Job Description

  • The Specimen Technician I (SPT I) is responsible for providing general support within the Specimen Processing Department.
  • This role involves data entry, specimen handling, and processing activities in a fast-paced production environment.
  • The position requires accuracy, organization, flexibility, and the ability to adapt to frequent changes while ensuring compliance with laboratory and safety standards.
  • The role is critical to maintaining quality and customer satisfaction.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform general specimen processing support functions including A-station, presort, centrifugation, aliquoting, imaging, and microfilming.
  • Pick up and deliver processed specimens to the laboratory.
  • Accurately enter specimen data with high productivity and attention to detail.
  • Learn and understand specimen types related to client-ordered tests.
  • Follow compliance regulations related to test ordering, which may change frequently.
  • Meet departmental productivity, quality standards, and completion timelines.
  • Work effectively in a biohazard environment while following safety protocols.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Communicate effectively with all levels of staff.
  • Demonstrate flexibility to work nights, weekends, holidays, on-call shifts, and overtime as required.

Requirement / Must Have:

  • Ability to enter at least 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
  • Willingness to work in a biohazard environment while practicing safe work habits.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and customer demands.

Experience:

  • No prior experience required.
  • Previous laboratory or specimen processing experience preferred.
  • Previous experience in a production environment preferred.
  • Medical background with knowledge of clinical laboratory terminology preferred.
  • Hospital laboratory experience is a plus.

Qualification And Education:

High School Diploma or equivalent.
