Job Description

Position Overview

The Principal Mechanical Engineer role based in Houston, TX at Gulf Companies – a global leader in the energy industry since 1953 – is designed for a seasoned professional who works independently and holds full technical responsibility for mechanical deliverables on large pipeline facility projects. The role entails producing primary mechanical deliverables and, on occasion, guiding and reviewing the work of junior engineers and designers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepares, reviews, or approves mechanical engineering calculations, specifications, and data sheets.
  • Prepares, reviews, or approves material requisitions, technical bid evaluations, and related lists (equipment, valve, piping, tie-in, and specialty items) in coordination with the Procurement Department.
  • Coordinates, reviews, and approves PFDs, P&IDs, piping plans, and site layouts while working closely with client personnel and vendors.
  • Observes factory acceptance testing when required and prepares or reviews engineering deliverable status reports and work plans.
  • Ensures mechanical scope compliance with deliverable logs, project specifications, and contract documents, and remains open to both short and extended term assignments.
  • Participates in the Mechanical Engineering Group Functions by contributing to mechanical equipment and piping system design, performing essential calculations and studies, assisting with site layouts and piping plans, engaging in process hazard analysis, and preparing construction drawing packages.

Required Qualifications

  • Typically 10+ years of experience focusing on oil and gas pipeline facilities including compressor stations, pump stations, metering/regulating stations, storage terminals, and loading/unloading facilities.
  • Knowledgeable in petroleum liquid and gas industry codes and standards (US DOT, AGA, ANSI, API, ASME, ASTM, MSS, NFPA) with the ability to apply them to pipeline facility system designs.
  • Proficient with computer systems in an engineering environment and possesses excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering.
  • Professional Engineering License required.
  • Demonstrates effective technical skills, meticulous attention to detail, analytical problem-solving abilities, creativity, and strong communication skills.
