Job Summary
This is a temporary promotion NTE one year that may be extended or terminated at any time based upon agency need.
Position is located in RI, Division of Radiological Safety & Security, in the Decommissioning, ISFSI & Reactor Health Physics Branch, King of Prussia, PA. Duties may be performed from current permanent duty station.
Supervisor is Elise Eve, Acting Branch Chief.
Position is subject to Confidential Financial Disclosure & Security Ownership Restriction reporting requirements.
Qualifications
In order to qualify for this position, in addition to the basic education requirements, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at the next lower grade level in the Federal service (GG-13) or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE includes experience that demonstrates a thorough knowledge of the technical aspects of the NRC inspection program and policies pertaining to radiation protection, radiological control, and radiological effluent and environmental monitoring. Experience in planning and conducting inspections of operating reactor facilities, decommissioning reactor and/or materials facilities, including inspections of Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installations (ISFSI), where radioactive materials were used.
Ideal Candidate
- Knowledge of the principles, theories and practices in the field of health physics and radiation safety, and the development, administration and implementation of regulatory programs with the use of byproduct, source and special nuclear material; and/or operating light water reactors; and/or Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installation (ISFSI) and/or decommissioning (materials or reactors) sites.
- Demonstrated ability to perform evaluations and analysis of radiological health hazards, radiation control programs, effluent controls and environmental monitoring programs, radiological procedures, and radiation detection systems/equipment at operating and/or decommissioning power reactor facilities; and/or Independent Spent Fuel Storage Facilities (ISFSI), and/or materials facilities using byproduct, source and/or special nuclear material.
- Knowledge of the NRC operating reactor assessment program, regional materials programs, decommissioning reactor programs, and/or ISFSI programs, including licensing, inspection, enforcement and allegation practices, policies, techniques and standards.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate, both orally and in writing, and to coordinate with other NRC offices, other government agencies, the public, the press and industry groups on varied complex and sometimes controversial technical problems.
- Ability to provide effective leadership to groups of NRC technical specialists during team inspections and/or license reviews, providing independent guidance on the evaluation of complex technical issues and feedback to the staff and management on the quality of work products.

Education
BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Candidates must have a thorough understanding of the theories, principles, and practices in the general field of health physics, evidenced by possession of a bachelor's degree in a natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, and mathematics, including calculus or equivalent, OR completion of the courses listed above, plus appropriate experience or other education; OR certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics.
