Position Overview
MDA Space is a global leader in satellite communications, Earth and space observation, and space exploration with a history of more than 450 missions. Building the space between proven and possible, we are seeking a robotic Mission Systems & Operations Flight Controller to join our Robotics & Space Operations team in Houston, Texas. In this role you will support user-centric development of robotic space systems and ground infrastructure for government and industry customers. You will play a pivotal role in human and unmanned spaceflight missions, working on projects such as Lunar Outpost (Gateway), the International Space Station, Commercial LEO, and deep space exploration initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Support a flight operations team by making critical decisions that affect human lives and billion-dollar space assets, and manage risk during both pre-flight and real-time operations.
- Oversee spaceflight missions by managing robotics assets, ground resources, and payload operations to ensure crew and vehicle safety.
- Coordinate with various stakeholders—including program teams, technical experts, and international partners—to support both human and unmanned missions.
- Define and enforce user-centric design principles for space and ground robotic systems by collaborating with technical teams and engaging in agile development cycles.
- Develop and execute Flight Plans, operational procedures, and testing protocols to certify flight readiness and enforce mission rules.
- Implement contingency plans for robotic systems and dynamic vehicle interactions to resolve malfunctions and restore normal operations.
- Provide leadership and maintain program visibility through regular technical and management meetings with customers.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of space flight operations experience controlling mission critical systems in a human spaceflight environment.
- At least 5 years of direct experience in simulations or training with mission-critical hardware/software in space flight, military, or similar safety-critical contexts.
- Familiarity with the Mobile Servicing System (Canadarm2 and Dextre), International Space Station operations, and associated MSS hardware elements.
- Strong robotics educational background and/or demonstrable interest in the field.
- Experience in human spaceflight safety protocols, risk assessment, and hazard identification.
- Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to make quick, accurate decisions under pressure.
- Strong communication skills and ability to convey complex technical information to diverse stakeholders.
- Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in engineering or a technical field, with experience on government space agency programs.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, be available for emergency situations, and travel as required.
- Successful candidates must obtain and hold security clearance at the reliability status level and pass security assessments for the Controlled Goods Program (CGP) and ITAR.
