Power Generation Controls Engineer

Confidential Client | Energy Infrastructure & Power Systems

Our client is a well-established provider of industrial power generation and energy infrastructure solutions. They are seeking a Power Generation Controls Engineer to support the design, programming, commissioning, and ongoing operation of engine-driven generator systems used in demanding industrial environments.

This role blends hands-on controls engineering with field support, customer interaction, and cross-functional project work. The ideal candidate enjoys solving real-world power and controls challenges and working directly with customers and project teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Program, configure, and support generator control systems, PLCs, HMIs, and protective relays
  • Support project execution from scope review through commissioning and handover
  • Review project documentation including SOWs, wiring diagrams, P&IDs, and electrical schematics
  • Collaborate with engineering and fabrication teams to release BOMs and resolve build questions
  • Commission and service power generation packages, including synchronizing systems and transfer switches
  • Troubleshoot electrical, controls, and automation issues in both shop and field environments
  • Support emergency service, preventative maintenance, and operational troubleshooting
  • Assist with factory testing and validation prior to shipment
  • Provide remote and onsite technical support to customers and field personnel
  • Ensure accurate delivery of technical documentation, drawings, and manuals
  • Contribute to internal automation tools, programming standards, and best practices
  • Build strong customer relationships through technical credibility and service mindset

Required Background

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Instrumentation Engineering
  • 5+ years of experience commissioning power generation and/or medium-voltage systems
  • Strong knowledge of PLCs, HMIs, generator controls, and electrical protection
  • Experience with low- and medium-voltage systems, AC/DC equipment, MCCs, VFDs, and switchgear
  • Ability to read and interpret single-line diagrams, P&IDs, and electrical schematics
  • Solid electrical troubleshooting and root-cause analysis skills
  • Working knowledge of NEC code
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools
  • Strong communication skills and customer-facing experience

Preferred / Nice to Have

  • Experience with SEL relays, NGR systems, and generator protection schemes
  • Familiarity with ComAp or Woodward generator controllers
  • Exposure to large industrial engines and OEM control platforms
  • Experience with load banks, synchronization, and parallel generation systems

Travel & Work Environment

  • Up to ~25% travel, including occasional multi-week field assignments
  • Mix of office, manufacturing, and field environments
  • May require evening or weekend support during commissioning or outages
