Staff Backend Engineer (Python)

Position Overview

Join Bestow as a Staff Backend Engineer on the Origination Group Engineering Team. In this role you will help develop and support our digital life insurance enrollment experience by building modular services in Python, Java, and Drools Rule Language. You'll work closely with Enrollment Product Managers, Underwriters, and external partners while collaborating with cross-functional teams to plan and execute the product roadmap.

Compensation Range: $190K - $225K

Key Responsibilities

• Develop web services using Python, PostgreSQL, Java, and Drools Rule Language.
• Build new platform capabilities to support scalable digital life insurance enrollment.
• Collaborate with Enrollment Product Managers, Underwriters, and external partners.
• Communicate effectively in a remote work environment to ensure smooth operations.
• Ensure software quality through maintainable code, automated testing, and robust monitoring.

Required Qualifications

• 8+ years of professional backend software development experience.
• Proficiency in Python or Java with hands-on experience in building web services.
• Experience with Docker and relational databases such as PostgreSQL (including ANSI SQL).
• Familiarity with designing APIs using Protocol Buffers, Swagger, or OpenAPI.
• Ability to write maintainable software backed with automated tests and peer collaboration.
• Excellent written communication skills for effective remote teamwork.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with Drools Rule Language.
• Background in working with distributed systems or microservices.
• Knowledge of cloud computing platforms and container orchestration (e.g., Kubernetes).
• Understanding of service integration using gRPC, REST, or asynchronous messaging patterns.
