Position Overview

Night Owl Companies, LLC is a growing, multi-division construction services organization supporting multifamily, commercial, and national construction projects. Our divisions include Electrical Contracting, Stone Fabrication & Installation, General Contracting, Restoration, and National Construction Services.

The Senior Accountant / Controller will oversee all accounting operations for Night Owl Companies, LLC and its affiliated entities. This hands-on leadership role is responsible for full-cycle construction accounting, financial reporting, job costing process management, and GAAP compliance while directly leading the Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, and Payroll functions. This is a full-time, in-person position based at our Corporate Office in Charlotte, NC.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage all corporate accounting functions across four construction entities plus four other smaller and simpler entities
  • Oversee Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, and Payroll, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance
  • Manage corporate processes to ensure accurate construction job costing and allocation of costs across the collective enterprise
  • Ensure accurate and timely month-end and year-end close processes
  • Maintain internal controls and ensure compliance with GAAP and company policies
  • Partner with executive leadership on budgeting, forecasting, cash flow, and strategic planning
  • Process payroll for multiple states and entities, ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations
  • Support or perform reconciliations, audits, sales tax filings, lien compliance, licensure reporting, and subcontractor reporting
  • Mentor, train, and develop accounting staff while enforcing accountability and best practices
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with operations, project management, administration, and leadership teams

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of construction accounting experience
  • Mindset of no-excuses ownership of all areas of oversight and responsibility
  • Demonstrated history of process improvement and problem recognition and resolution
  • Proven leadership experience managing AR, AP, Payroll, or accounting teams
  • Prior experience in a Controller, Senior Accountant, or Accounting Manager role
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Job costing and WIP
    • Construction revenue recognition
    • Multi-entity and multi-state accounting
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, and hold finance team members accountable
  • High level of accuracy, organization, and attention to detail
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively with leadership and operations teams
  • Substantial experience working in QuickBooks Online on a daily basis

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a multi-division or national construction environment
  • Familiarity with construction accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, JobTread, Buildertrend, Dash, or similar)
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA preferred but not required)
